Restasis Eye Drops

How effective are the Restasis Eye Drops?

Restasis Eye DropsRestasis eye drops are medically prescribed eye drops particularly used to treat dry eyes. Having dry eyes is usually due to the inflammation of the eye or some other condition which prevents normal tear production. Applying these eye drops allows for better tear production, sparing the patient from common symptoms caused by the dryness of the eyes. Doctors often prescribe this product for that purpose, especially to patients who may be using other types of eye drops more than once a day. Not all people can or should use Restasis, though, that’s why a doctor’s prescription is a non-negotiable requirement to acquiring this drug.

The primary substance of the Restasis eye drops is called cyclosporine, which is produced by a kind of fungus scientifically referred to as the Tolypocladum Inflatum. This is often used in medicine to keep the body from rejecting organs in transplant operations. When applied on the eyes, it suppresses the production of T-cells. The production of T-cells is essential to immune reactions, so suppressing its growth also means the reduction of inflammation.  Cyclosporine also helps strengthen and preserve the epithelial cells, keeping them alive. Epithelial cells have a tendency to commit cellular suicide or apoptosis whenever the eye is subjected to enough stress.

A study published by Allergan in Opthamology (2000 issue) has shown that 15% of a sample of patients experienced the effectiveness of Restasis eye drops. This study was compared to patients who were prescribed with using artificial tears, where only 5% of the sample got positive feedback. The entire study was conducted among 1200 patients who were chosen randomly and were tested under a randomized, controlled, and four multicenter studies.

According to the 2000 issue of the Managed Care Journal, the use of these eye drops has also resulted to less frequent visits to the ophthalmologist. The usage rate of Ancillary drops has also decreased, which translates to higher overall patient satisfaction.

These eye drops have also been known to be ideal for those who will be undergoing LASIK surgery. A study conducted in the University of California, San Diego in the year 2008 revealed that the visual recovery rate of LASIK patients who used the Restasis eye drops are much faster compared to those who only used the regular eye drops.

These eye drops, however, have been discouraged for nursing or pregnant women since, according to DailyMed, there have been few studies proving that they are safe to them.

However, the effectiveness of the Restasis eye drops is limited to long term use only. You get the most benefits from using the drug only after you have been regularly using it for six months, and that means you have to have followed the doctor’s prescription to the dot, and that you’re not allergic or your eyes are not sensitive to cyclosporine. Restasis should only be used when other forms of ordinary eye medication don’t seem to work. There are other ways to treat the dryness of the eyes. Ask your doctor about them before you consider Restasis.
